On July 28, 2023, the European Commission published new Regulation (EU)2023/1542 on Batteries and Used Batteries, amending Directive 2008/98/EC and Regulation 2019/1020, and repealing Directive 2006/66/EC. This Regulation shall enter into force on the 20th day after its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union, unless otherwise provided in paragraph 2 and other provisions of the Regulation, and shall apply from February 18, 2024.

The regulation sets specific requirements for sustainability, safety, labeling, marking and information that are met before batteries are allowed to be placed or used on the EU market. The regulations also stipulate minimum requirements for extended producer liability, recycling and disposal of waste batteries, and reporting.

Specific time for mandatory implementation:February 18, 2024.

Mandatory applicable batteries:Portable battery, LMT battery, SLI battery, industrial battery, electric vehicle battery.
