  Lithium battery refers to a battery containing lithium (including metallic lithium, lithium alloys, lithium ions, and lithium polymers) in an electrochemical system. Lithium batteries can be roughly divided into two categories: lithium metal batteries and lithium ion batteries.

Lithium metal batteries are usually non-rechargeable and contain lithium in the metallic state. Lithium-ion batteries do not contain metallic lithium and are rechargeable.

 IEC62133-2 is currently the most commonly used safety standard for lithium batteries around the world. This specification is mainly aimed at the safety standards of single batteries and batteries containing alkaline or non-acid electrolytes and portable sealed single batteries and batteries.

The latest version of IEC61333-2:2017 was released by IECEE (International Electrotechnical Commission) in February 2017, and was transformed into an EU harmonized standard by CENELEC in May 2017.

 In the EU CE certification system, EN62133-2 for secondary batteries is explicitly mentioned in Annex M (Equipment Contains Batteries and their protection circuits) in the harmonized standard for safety parts EN 62368-2

Requirements. Therefore, when consumer electronics products containing lithium batteries apply for CE, the lithium batteries must meet the requirements of the IEC62133 standard, which is usually reflected in the need for the applicant to provide an IEC62133 Test Report for the lithium battery.

Differences between battery IEC62133 standard and EN62133 standard

Difference 1: Different certification bodies

EN 62133 adopts EU standards and uses EU production needs for production. IEC 62133 is an international standard, and production is carried out in accordance with an internationally accepted standard.

Difference 2: Different purpose

The purpose of IEC62133 is to promote international cooperation on standardization and related issues in the field of electrical and electronic engineering and enhance international mutual understanding. The purpose of EN62133 is to coordinate electrical standards issued by standards bodies in relevant European countries and eliminate technical barriers to trade.

Difference 3: The establishment time is different

IEC62133 is the earliest international electrical standardization body in the world, responsible for chemical plants in the fields of electrical engineering and electronic engineering. EN62133 was established in Brussels, Belgium in 1976, as a result of the merger of two earlier institutions.

The main difference between IEC62133 and EN62133 lies in the different certification bodies. EN is an EU standard, IEC is an international standard, and the test content is the same. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) was established in 1906 and has a history of 109 years until 2015. It is the earliest international electrical standardization body in the world, responsible for chemical work in the fields of electrical engineering and electronic engineering. The main test items of IEC/EN62133-2 are as follows:

1. Continuous charging test, which clearly states that the 7-day charging test is carried out at the standard charging voltage;

2. Shell stress test, pointing out that this test is only applicable to the case where the battery uses a molded shell;

3. For external short circuit test of the battery, the ambient temperature was changed from 20+/-5 degrees to 55+/-5 degrees, which was more stringent;

4. In the external short circuit test of the battery pack, the ambient temperature was changed from 55+/-5 degrees to 20+/-5 degrees, which became relaxed, and key component certification and important functional safety assessment concepts were introduced;

5. Drop test, add the optional drop surface to metal;

6. Thermal abuse test, the maintenance time to reach the maximum temperature is uniformly required for 30 minutes;

7. For the extrusion test, the strength range requirements are more precise, and the shape variable is deleted as the test termination condition;

8. The battery pack overcharge test was changed to 1.4 times the charging voltage of a single-cell battery pack (but ≤6V), and the charging voltage of multiple cells in series was 1.2 times, which was looser than the previous version;

9. Forced discharge test, adding requirements for discharge voltage and reference test time based on discharge curve;

10. Mechanical testing, adding vibration and acceleration impact, canceling the requirements previously referred to transportation standards IEC 62281 and UN 38.3.

IEC/EN62133-2 has identification requirements in Section 9 (marking), and labels that meet the requirements should contain the following seven items of information:

1. secondary (rechargeable) Li or Li-ion;

2. battery or cell designation;

3. polarity;

4. date of manufacture (which may be in code);

5. name or identification of manufacturer or supplier.

7. Nominal voltage.
