UK Home Appliance UKCA Compliance: BS EN 60335 Standard and Post-Brexit Market Access Changes

After Brexit, the UK shifted household appliance compliance from CE to UKCA. Manufacturers wishing to sell into the British market must understand the differences between the two systems in safety standards, marking and notified bodies. Ningbo Xuntong Standard tracks UK market-access developments and here reviews the core points of UKCA appliance compliance to help enterprises transition smoothly.

1. Relationship Between UKCA and CE

UKCA is the UK’s domestic conformity mark, covering England, Scotland and Wales; Northern Ireland continues to use the CE and UKNI systems. For appliance safety, the UK adopts the BS EN 60335 series, technically consistent with the EU EN 60335, but with the BS prefix and a UK Approved Body as the certifying organisation. Ningbo Xuntong Standard reminds that the same test report can be partially mutually recognised between the UK and EU, but certificates and marks must not be mixed.

2. Safety Standard Basis

UK household appliance safety is based on BS EN 60335-1 general standard plus the BS EN 60335-2 product series, corresponding to the international IEC 60335 series and the Chinese GB 4706 series. Enterprises can build a difference assessment on existing IEC/GB test data, focusing on the UK National Differences — for example plug, voltage and some structural requirements.

3. Technical File and UK Declaration

UKCA requires a UK Declaration of Conformity. The technical file should contain risk assessment, test reports, circuit and structural drawings, instructions and nameplate. Unlike the EU, the UK requires the technical file to be kept within the UK or retrievable by UK authorities — a detail often overlooked by exporters.

4. Marking and Transition Arrangements

For some products the UK still accepts stock bearing the CE mark, but newly placed products should gradually switch to UKCA. Ningbo Xuntong Standard advises planning the marking switch early to avoid customs and platform-review obstacles. The plug must comply with BS 1363 and instructions and warnings must be in English.

5. How Ningbo Xuntong Standard Can Help

Ningbo Xuntong Standard provides UKCA pre-testing, UK national-difference assessment and Declaration of Conformity support for appliances under the BS EN 60335 series, and assists with UK Approved Bodies. More standards interpretation is available in the regulations and standards column, appliance testing capability in the appliance testing column, and the official Ningbo Xuntong Standard website offers the quotation guide. Moving compliance forward makes entry to the UK market smoother.
