On May 5, 2022, EN71-13:2021+A1:2022 was released by the European Committee for Standardization as a new version of the standard “Toy Safety-Part 13: Smell Board Games, Cosmetic Bags and Taste Games”. Its main purpose is to implement Directives 2020/2089/EU and 2020/2088/EU on toy fragrances and replace the current version of EN71 -13:2021.

In member states, EN71-13:2021+A1:2022 should obtain the status of national standards by November 2022 at the latest, and conflicting national standards should be withdrawn before this date. Germany released the national version of DINEN71-13:2022-07 in July, and DINEN71-13:2021-06 was withdrawn.
Currently, EN71-13:2021 still serves as the basis for presumption of compliance with Directive 2009/48/EC on toy safety. Only as of May 15, it replaced the older version of EN71-13:2014, which was resolved by the Commission implementing its (EU)2021/1992 of November 15, 2021 on a harmonized standard for toys drafted in support of Directive 2009/48/EC.
It is expected that the latest version of EN71-13 will be cited in the next release of the standard to support Directive 2009/48/EC in the Official Journal of the European Union. After the unification transition period ends (which may be 3-6 months), this version will be legally binding.
