Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry issued temporary safety technical specifications for portable energy storage power supplies;

Safety requirements (interim summary) for portable power supplies have been created.

In recent years, portable power supplies equipped with lithium-ion batteries and other devices that output alternating current have become a means for consumers to use home appliances and charge devices such as smartphones in the event of a disaster or outdoors.

On the other hand, according to information received by the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation under the Consumer Product Safety Act (information on serious and non-serious product accidents), accidents caused by the use of portable power supplies (all fires) are on the rise and there are certain electrical risks (fire, electric shock, etc.).

Portable power supplies are currently not affectedElectrical and Materials Safety ActHowever, in view of the existence of certain electrical risks (fire, electric shock, etc.) and the lack of safety requirements for products, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) established a public-private participatory research group to develop orders and requirements required for five-year safety measures. In February 2024, we studied necessary risk reduction measures based on risk scenarios for portable power supplies and prepared safety requirements (interim summary) that include safety measures.

We require those involved in the manufacturing and import of portable power supplies to use these safety requirements (interim summary) to promote safety measures for portable power supplies and further advance product safety measures through risk assessments and other means.
