DarkSky Approved’s program provides objective third-party certification of products, designs and completed projects to minimize glare, reduce light intrusion, and not pollute the night sky.

DarkSky certification:

High-quality outdoor lighting protects and restores the natural night environment by controlling light pollution.

DarkSky Approved plans to provide objective third-party certification for lighting products, lighting designs and installed lighting items to minimize glare, reduce light intrusion and reduce light pollution.

To obtain certification, you must:

Ø Limit upward luminous flux;

Ø Avoid glare;

Ø Avoid excessive lighting;

Ø Use dimming and other appropriate lighting controls;

Ø Minimize short-wavelength (blue) light in the night environment.

Standard requirements:

General requirements: Approved luminaires must use a warm color 3000K CCT and a lower light source. Amber and PC amber light sources are also allowed under this plan. If the light fixture has other CCT and installation options, it must indicate 3000K CCT(or hotter) and fixed installation on the website, specification sheet, and order to receive DarkSky Approved.

Commercial lighting:

Ø Photometric files are required to verify performance characteristics.

Ø The upper illumination light is 0.5% of the total output or 50 lumens; whichever is lower, no more than 10 lumens in the 90-100 degree UL area is allowed.

Ø Road and area lights must have pre-or post-installation shielding options.

Ø Lamps need to be fixed installed to ensure installation according to test. If necessary, a leveling adjustment of ±10 degrees is allowed.

Ø Lamps must have a dimming capability of 10% of the full rating.

Ø The maximum correlated color temperature of the light source should be 3000K.

Ø Lamps must have safety certification from an independent laboratory.

Residential lighting:

Ø Light upward: The brightness of the light source reflection or supporting structure does not exceed 50 lumens. The light source should not be visible on the horizontal plane, i.e. the lamp must be completely shielded.

Ø Lamps need to be fixed installed to ensure installation according to test.

Ø The maximum correlated color temperature of the light source should be 3000K.

Ø Lamps must have safety certification from an independent laboratory.

Special lighting:

Significantly reduce light pollution and nocturnal habitat destruction

Ø Photometric files are required to verify performance characteristics.

Ø Spectral power distribution measurement is required to verify color characteristics.

Ø There is no illumination, BUG level is U-0.

Ø There must be pre-or post-installation shielding options.

Ø Lamps must have a dimming capacity of 1% of the full rating.

Ø Intelligent control that meets program purposes.

Ø Visible light emission in the range 380 – 520nm does not exceed 7%.

Ø Lamps must have safety certification from an independent laboratory.

Wildlife tuned lights:

Lighting specially designed for turtle habitat

Ø Photometric files are required to verify performance characteristics.

Ø Spectral power distribution measurement is required to verify color characteristics.

Ø There is no illumination, BUG U-0.

Ø There must be pre-or post-installation shielding options.

Ø Limited to turtle specific spectrum 565nm monochromatic amber light source.

Ø Lamps must have a dimming capacity of 10% of the full rating.

Ø Lamps must have safety certification from an independent laboratory.

Certification fee:

* There is only one fee per product family, i.e. a group of lamps with the same body but different distribution and/or lumen output, rather than each individual SKUs or specification.

** Single-that is, it does not belong to a certain product line.

† Residential lights are defined as those with traditional retail packaging, sold in retail settings, such as home improvement stores or illuminated showrooms, and utilize the mains voltage in the home.
