On November 16, 2023, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officially released the ENERGY STAR Downlights V1.0 specification to replace the embedded downlights and their modification kits in the V2.2 specification of the upcoming lights.
The main contents of the new specification are as follows:
1. Product range
This specification is limited to downlights and built-in downlight conversion kits directly connected to the grid with a total input power of less than 150W.
1.1 product category
Downlight with built-in or integrated LED modules, opening diameter ≤10 inches:
Fully or partially embedded in the ceiling;
Surface mounted to ceiling;
Install on the wall and illuminate downward;
Equipped with ropes, chains, pipes, etc. so that it can be fixed to the ceiling or wall
Embedded downlight modification kit with built-in or integrated LED module, opening diameter ≤10 inches;
Products with emergency functions and Wi-Fi functions can apply for Energy Star certification.
1.2 Excluded products
Embedded downlight without integrated light source
Built-in downlights with apertures greater than 10 inches and built-in downlight modification kits
Track mounted spotlights
Single and multi-head single-point installation spotlights
Embedded, semi-embedded, surface mounted or suspended 1 4, 2 2 or 2 4 panel lights
Luminaires for general office lighting, such as chandeliers and panel lights
Dressing table light
Ceiling fan light kit
Ceiling lights that do not meet the definition of downlight in Section 4
Semi-ceiling lights that do not meet the definition of downlight in Section 4

Wardrobe lights and cabinet lights
Embedded luminaires that do not meet the definition of downlight in Section 4
dimmable LED lighting
Products with power-consuming functions unrelated to lighting control in active mode or off state (e.g., luminaires with voice assistance, speakers, UV disinfection, or cameras)

Outdoor ceilings, chandeliers, pillar lights and wall lights
Outdoor safety lighting
Removable desk and floor work lights

Ventilator with lighting
Torch and floor lamps

Cover lights and work lights
LED ceiling lamp modification kit

HID lamps or their SSL replacements
Socket adapter or converter light
