Salt spray testing is to assess the salt-spray corrosion resistance quality of products or metal materials, and the salt spray test results are the judgment of product quality. Whether the judgment results are correct and reasonable is the key to correctly measuring the salt-spray corrosion resistance quality of products or metals.
In layman’s terms, salt spray testing is an accelerated corrosion resistance assessment method for artificial atmospheres. It is to atomize a certain concentration of salt water; then spray it into a closed incubator. The corrosion resistance of the tested sample is reflected by observing the changes of the tested sample after being placed in the box for a period of time. It is an accelerated test method. The salt concentration of chloride in the salt spray environment is several or dozens of times that of the salt spray content in the general natural environment, which greatly improves the corrosion rate. The time taken to obtain the results is also greatly shortened by conducting salt spray testing on the product.
The artificial simulated salt spray test includes three different experimental methods.
01
Neutral salt spray test (NSS test)
One of the earliest accelerated corrosion testing methods with the widest application fields has emerged. It uses a 5% sodium chloride salt solution, and the pH value of the solution is adjusted to the neutral range (6.5~7.2) as a spray solution. The test temperature is 35℃, and the settlement rate of salt mist is required to be 1~2ml/80cm/h.
Scope of application:Metals and alloys, metal coatings, conversion films, anodic oxide films, organic coatings on metal substrates.
02
Acetic acid salt spray test (ASS test)
Developed on the basis of neutral salt spray testing. It adds some glacial acetic acid to a 5% sodium chloride solution to reduce the pH of the solution to about 3, the solution becomes acidic, and the finally formed salt mist also changes from neutral salt mist to acidic. Its corrosion rate is about three times faster than the NSS test.
Scope of application:Copper + nickel + chromium or nickel + chromium decorative coatings, aluminum anodized films and organic coatings.
03
Copper salt accelerated acetic acid salt spray test (CASS test)
It is a rapid salt spray corrosion test recently developed abroad. The test temperature is 50 ° C, and a small amount of copper salt-copper chloride is added to the salt solution to strongly induce corrosion. Its corrosion rate is approximately eight times that of the NSS test.
Scope of application:Copper + nickel + chromium or nickel + chromium decorative coatings, aluminum anodized films and organic coatings.
Overall, compared with the natural environment, the salt concentration of chloride in the artificial simulated salt fog environment can be several times or dozens of times that of the salt fog content of the general natural environment, which greatly improves the corrosion rate. When the product is tested in salt fog, the time taken to obtain results is also greatly shortened. If a product sample is tested in a natural exposure environment, it may take up to one year for it to corrode, but if it is tested in artificially simulated salt spray environmental conditions, similar results can be obtained in only 24 hours.
According to the standard conversion (theoretical value) in the existing industry, the conversion relationship between the 24-hour salt spray test and the natural environment is as follows:
Neutral salt spray test 24 hours 1 year in natural environment
Acetic acid salt spray test 24 hours natural environment 3 years
Copper salt accelerated acetic acid salt spray test 24h 8 years in natural environment
