IEC 60669-2-1:2021 applies to electronic control equipment and is a general term covering electronic switches, Home and Building Electronic Systems (HBES)/Building Automation and Control Systems (BACS) switches and electronic expansion units.

It is suitable for electronic switches and HBES/BACS switches. It is only used for alternating current (AC). It has a rated switching voltage of no more than 250 V and a rated current of no more than 16 A. It is used for indoor or outdoor household and similar fixed electrical installations.
It is also suitable for electronic expansion units with rated supply voltages not exceeding 250 V AC and 120 V DC, such as sensors and buttons.
This document also applies to Electronic Remote Control Switches (RCS) and Electronic Delay Switches (TDS). Specific requirements are given in Annex FF.
The fifth edition cancels and replaces the fourth edition published in 2002, Revision 1:2008 and Revision 2:2015. This version constitutes a technical revision.
This version includes the following major technical changes compared to the previous version:
a) incorporates HBES switch requirements previously included in IEC 60669-2-5;
