These three certification schemes are not always mandatory as it depends on the products intended to be sold in South Africa.
　　
South Africa ICASA certification
　　
Summary of the ICASA certification approval process:
　　
ICASA is South Africa’s official communications, broadcasting and postal services regulator. Radio frequency transmitter and receiver products that use the radio spectrum or are connected to public networks and are intended to be sold in South Africa must obtain mandatory ICASA type-approval certification unless specifically exempted by regulatory agencies.

ICASA certification testing can only be performed in ISO17025 accredited testing laboratories. Applicants must provide local suppliers (certificates will specify specific suppliers). ICASA approvals are valid for an indefinite period, and the lead time for the ICASA approval process is approximately 6 weeks.

All equipment that passes ICASA type-approval must be labeled and comply with national authority labeling regulations:

1. The minimum size of the ICASA logo is 3 mm x 3 mm.
　　
2. The aspect ratio of the entire ICASA label must be 1:2 (e.g. 10 x 20 mm)
　　
3. The label must contain the ICASA logo and the certificate number issued by ICASA
　　
4. The ICASA certificate number must follow the following format: TA XXXX-YYYY, where:
　　
TA: Type approval
　　
XXXX: Year in which TA certificate was issued
　　
YYYY: Numbering sequence issued by ICASA.
　　
The labels on the equipment and its packaging must be clearly legible. Labels must be properly protected to avoid any damage and possible confusion. When applying for type approval, local suppliers must specify whether electronic and/or printed labels are to be attached to the equipment.

Summary of the NRCS certification type approval process:
　　
NRCS stands for national regulatory mandatory specifications and is the approval authority for electrical and electronic products intended for sale in South Africa.
　　
The NRCS approval process is a conformity assessment system that serves as a mark for electrical and electronic safety and energy efficiency. NRCS mandatory requirements are based on international standards; therefore, all equipment falling within the scope of mandatory regulations must comply with South African safety standards. Essentially, equipment connected to the public network (230 V/400 V ac, 50 Hz) and all rechargeable equipment must apply for NRCS approval.
　　
NRCS compliance testing based on safety and/or performance requirements can only be performed by an accredited laboratory.
　　
The NRCS certificate is valid for 3 years. The preparation time for obtaining this certification is approximately 18 weeks and applicants must provide a local supplier.
　　
NRCS certification label requirements:
　　
According to the NRCS, there are no mandatory requirements for product marking to ensure compliance with national safety standards. The LOAs issued by NRCS are sufficient to demonstrate compliance with NRCS requirements.
　　
Summary of SABS approval type approval process:
　　
SABS stands for the South African Bureau of Standards and is a conformity mark evaluation system that serves as an EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) compliance mark. SABS identifies the national standards that must be followed to obtain an EMC approval certificate, called the SABS CoC (Certificate of Compliance).
　　
SABS applies to all non-telecom products. Products to which ICASA does not apply will require mandatory SABS approval.
　　
According to SABS, products that receive ICASA type-approval do not require SABS.
　　
As required by the ISO/IEC 17025 standard, SABS testing for EMC compliance can only be performed by an authorized laboratory called SABS A-Lab.
　　
SABS approval is valid for 3 years and applicants must provide local suppliers to obtain approval.
　　
SABS certification label requirements:
　　
SABS product markings ensure that products meet safety, quality and remediation requirements. The label must appear as follows:

1. The manufacturer’s trade or brand name (if there is no brand name, the manufacturer’s license number is sufficient)
　　
2. model
　　
3. Rating requirements (voltage, current, power, frequency…)
　　
4. When testing a small part of a specification, the standard number will be added to the tag.
