New EU standard requirements for ovens and other home appliances

The surface temperature rise requirement for ovens and other baking home appliances has always been a difficult point in the EU CE and GS certification. Recently, the European Technical Committee issued a new version of the standard EN IEC 60335-2-9:2023+A11:2023, which replaces the old version of the standard EN 60335-2-9:2003+A1:2004+A2:2006+A12:2007+A13:2010, ending the long-term situation of not updating or revising this standard.

Previously, the old standard EN 60335-2-9:2003+A1:2004+A2:2006+A12:2007+A13:2010 allowed the use of double limits plus exemption conditions for high-temperature labels and air outlets, but the OJ Announcement and (EU) 2017/1357 Directive considered that it did not meet the safety goals specified in Point 1 (c) of Annex I to Directive 2014/35/EU and Point 2 (b) of this Annex. Therefore, for a long time, such products have faced strict surface temperature rise testing requirements, which has brought great technical trouble to the factory.

The release of the new standard relaxes the requirements for the old standard to a certain extent. The new version of the standard DOP date is January 12, 2024. However, when this new version of the standard can be used to issue CE-LVD certificates, it still needs to wait for the European Union to quote this standard under the official journal LVD Directive. It can be implemented only after this standard is cited.

Main changes in the new standard

Surface temperature rise:

If an appliance has an accessible surface for which the temperature rise limits are specified in Table 102 and the provisions of footnote b of Table 102 apply, or the values of Table 102+ 40K are allowed in Clause 11.102, the appliance shall be marked with the symbol IEC 60417-5041 (2002-10), the rules of ISO 3864-1 apply elsewhere than the specified color, or marked with CAUTION: Hot surfaces

For ovens, rotating grills and cookware, during testing, the temperature rise of the external front, top and rear surfaces accessible to EN 61032 test probe B shall not exceed the values specified in Table 102+ 40K, except for non-measuring surfaces. Except for the measuring surface, the temperature rise on external surfaces shall not exceed the values specified in Table 102.
