What is a car VOC?
Volatile organic compounds emitted by cars.

When the VOC in the car reaches a certain concentration, people will feel headache, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue of their limbs in a short period of time. In severe cases, they will experience convulsions, coma, and memory loss. Automobile VOCs can harm the liver, kidneys, brain and nervous system, and may even cause cancer.

1. The space inside the car is small and the pollution level is high.
2. Cars are very airtight. In most cases, doors and windows are closed, which is not conducive to the spread of harmful gases.
3. Automobiles are mobile vehicles, with a large amount of convective heat exchange with the outside world, and external climate conditions change greatly, making it more difficult to control temperature and other conditions.
4. Automobile glass doors and windows cover a large area. When exposed to sunlight for a long time, the temperature inside the car changes greatly. At high temperatures, harmful substances in car interior parts and decorative materials are more likely to volatilize.
5. The high population density in the car increases pollution.
primary test method
For automotive VOC content testing, it mainly focuses on vehicle VOC, assembly (interior parts) VOC and material VOC. The corresponding test methods will be described below.
Vehicle VOC content test method
Different vehicle systems have different test standards, including German PV3938 standard, Japanese “Vehicle VOC Test Method”, Russian GOST R51206-2004 standard and domestic “Sampling Test Method for Volatile Organic Compounds and Aldehydes and Ketones Substances in Vehicles” i.e. HJ/T 400-2007 test standard, the specific test conditions are as follows:
PV3938 test standard: test conditions:23℃, 50% RH; test method: static test; sampling method: use infrared lamp to illuminate different parts of the vehicle at the same time to make its surface temperature reach 65℃. After closing for a certain period of time, collect air samples inside the vehicle.
“Vehicle VOC Test Method”: Test conditions:23℃, 50% RH; Test method: semi-dynamic test; adjust the temperature to 40, hold for 4.5 hours, use DNPH sampling tube to collect the air inside the vehicle for 30 minutes, and then measure formaldehyde; Start the car engine after sampling, make the air conditioner work normally, and measure the VOC.
GOST R51206-2004 standard: Test conditions:23, 50% RH; Test method: dynamic test; Mode 1: Driving at a constant speed of 50 kilometers/hour, and testing after 20 minutes of stable driving speed; Mode 2: Testing after 20 minutes of idling at the small stable speed specified by the manufacturer.
HJ/T 400-2007 test standard: Published by the State Environmental Protection Administration on December 7, 2007 and implemented on March 1, 2008. The standard stipulates the setting of sampling points for measuring volatile organic compounds and aldehydes and ketones in the passenger cabin of motor vehicles, technical requirements for sampling environmental conditions, sampling methods and equipment, corresponding measurement methods and equipment, data processing, quality assurance, etc.
Ambient temperature: 25.0±1.0℃ relative humidity: 50 ±10%. Test method: 1. Put the vehicle under inspection into a vehicle testing environment that meets the regulations;2. The new vehicle should be rolled off the production line for 28d± 5 d and the internal surface must be free of cover;3. The windows and doors are open, and the static placement time shall not be less than 6h;4. During the preparation period, the vehicle testing conditions should comply with the regulations, and the sampling device should be installed;5. Close all doors and windows, and the vehicle under inspection should remain closed for 16 hours, and start collection.
